The head of the labor law department-chief labor inspector Ieva Piličiauskaitė-Dulkė emphasizes that an employee can submit requests to the employer related to the fulfillment of family obligations, which the employer must consider and give a motivated written answer to.

The principle of respecting family obligations of the employee is implemented through the provisions of the Labor Code regulating the right to holidays and rest, ie annual leave, targeted leave, free leave, free time off, additional days off – Mother’s Day or Father’s Day; working time, i.e. part-time working time, the right to choose a shift, remote work, the right to choose a working time regime, the right to an additional break for breastfeeding employees; termination of the employment contract, i.e. protection and guarantees when terminating the employment relationship with employees raising young children under the age of three; as well as protection and guarantees for pregnant workers; when terminating the employment contract in accordance with Article 56 of the Labor Code, at the initiative of the employee for important reasons; in the case of terminating the employment contract at the initiative of the employer without the fault of the employee, the notice periods are tripled for employees raising a child under 14 years of age or a disabled child under 18 years of age.

“Implementation of the mentioned principle ensures the psychological health of employees, which leads to higher work results and higher productivity”, emphasizes I. Piličiauskaitė-Dulkė.

More detailed information about the applicable guarantees, examples of good practice, when the company applies additional measures (not only prescribed in legal acts) that help employees combine work and family obligations, is published on the website of the Labor Inspectorate.
