The identity of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer involved in the shooting of a Korean man by a police officer in Los Angeles (LA), USA has been identified. Mr. Yang, a man in his 40s, died on the 2nd (local time) after being shot by a police officer who arrived after his family requested help for mental illness treatment.

According to foreign media reports such as ABC7 and the Los Angeles Times on the 11th, the LAPD confirmed that the police officer involved in Yang’s death was Andres Lopez.

Yang’s mother expressed her anger at a press conference on the 9th, saying, “I called the LA County Department of Mental Health (DMH), but instead of helping my son, they called the police to my house and shot my son to death.”

The bereaved family’s lawyer explained, “Mr. Yang was diagnosed with bipolar disorder accompanied by schizoaffective disorder when he was alive.”

Closed-circuit (CC) TV footage released by the bereaved family shows nine police officers entering to subdue Mr. Yang.

The family said Yang was shot in the living room just minutes after officers arrived.

“The police officer prevented the parents from approaching their dead son and cleaned the apartment,” said the family’s lawyer. “They spent hours cleaning up the crime scene.” “Everyone, even new police officers, knows that this is obstruction of justice and that they cannot do that,” he said, raising suspicions of a cover-up.

Yang’s bereaved family is currently demanding a full investigation from the LA County District Attorney’s Office and the U.S. District Attorney’s Office.

The LAPD previously explained that the shooting occurred while responding to a report about a violent man around 11 a.m. on the 2nd.

The police announced, “It was reported that Mr. Yang did not reside at the location, was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder, and attempted to assault DMH staff when they attempted to communicate with him.”

According to police, DMH staff determined that Yang could cause harm to others and informed officers that they had completed the paperwork to send him to a facility for 72 hours for a psychiatric evaluation. At the time of the incident, an ambulance was dispatched to the scene to transport Mr. Yang to a nearby hospital.

The police said that they had informed Mr. Yang in advance that he would either come out of the apartment or receive the key and enter the entrance, and that during this process, Mr. Yang approached the police officer with a weapon and shot him.

Controversy over excessive suppression arose because alternative methods, such as a pistol-type paralyzing stun gun (Taser gun), were not used against Mr. Yang, who did not possess a firearm. An LAPD spokesperson announced that the body cameras will be released by the middle of next month.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene pronounced Yang dead at the scene. The police reported that a weapon with a blade length of 15 cm and a total length of 28 cm was found at the scene.
