IDF Uses Drones to Explore Hamas Tunnels in Gaza
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have discovered that the best method to navigate through the intricate Hamas tunnels in Gaza is through the use of drones. This revelation was made public in a report by the “Wall Street Journal” on Friday.
The military reportedly experimented with various techniques such as robots, robot dogs, and real dogs to explore the underground labyrinths. However, it was quickly determined that drones were the most cost-effective and efficient option for exploring the potential death traps hidden beneath the surface.
In addition to navigating the tunnels, the drones have been utilized in the dense urban battlefield of Gaza to conduct reconnaissance, enter buildings before sending in soldiers, and as guided munitions for smaller units.
The IDF’s use of drones has proven to be a crucial tool in minimizing casualties as they navigate their way through a densely populated, heavily fortified, and heavily entrenched battlefield.
Initially, heavy robots tethered to the surface by a cable were used to search the hundreds of kilometers of passages beneath Gaza. However, the tunnel floors proved to be a challenge for the robots, and some passageways were too narrow to operate. Robotic dogs were also tested but were found to be costly and heavy.
On the other hand, small drones have been able to create 3D maps of the tunnels, navigate through small spaces, and establish their own communication networks underground. This has been particularly beneficial for smaller IDF units, such as those composed of reservists who were called into battle after attacks by Hamas.
