(ANSA) – TEL AVIV, 12 SEPTEMBER – The Israeli army confirmed that it carried out two drone strikes today in southern Syria, hitting Ahmed al-Jaber, a member of Hezbollah’s so-called “Golan File” unit, in the Quneitra area, and in another strike, in the al-Rafidun area, a “militant who was promoting acts of terrorism against Israel, and was acting in cooperation and under the guidance of Iran”. Two Syrian fighters close to the Lebanese Hezbollah were killed in the Syrian Golan Heights by an Israeli missile strike, according to the Observatory for Human Rights in Syria. The source said the attack took place in the Qunaytra region, close to the Armistice Line between Syria and Israel signed in 1974 after the October war of the previous year. On the eastern side of the Golan, the one controlled by the government of Damascus, a local militia operates, co-opted by Hezbollah and known as the “Islamic Resistance for the Liberation of the Golan”. The Heights were largely conquered by Israel in 1967 and 1973. And they were annexed, without international recognition, in 1981. In 2019, the United States recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Heights controlled by Israel. (ANSA).
