Idriss El Azami El Idrissi has been selected by the Justice and Development Party secretariat general to run for president of the Chamber of Representatives against Ahmed Touizi. The vote takes place Tuesday afternoon as the newly formed government majority holds 210 of 395 seats.
The leadership of the Justice and Development Party, known as the PJD, has officially designated Idriss El Azami El Idrissi to contest the upcoming leadership vote at the lower house of parliament. The decision follows a secret ballot organized during a party meeting to select a candidate for the chamber’s presidency. He will face Ahmed Touizi, the nominee put forward by the governing majority.
Chamber Election Rules Set for Tuesday
The lower house is scheduled to convene for a plenary session to elect its new president. According to the internal regulations of the chamber, the voting proceeds via a secret ballot. Securing the position in the first round requires an absolute majority of the chamber’s members. If no candidate reaches that threshold, a second round takes place decided by a relative majority of the votes cast. A tie in the second round is broken by age, favoring the older candidate, or through a random draw if both contenders share the same birth date.

Coalition Controls 210 Parliamentary Seats
The governing alliance unites the Authenticity and Modernity Party, the Istiqlal Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, and the Party of Progress and Socialism. Together, these partners control 210 seats out of the 395 total available in the chamber. Their standing is further bolstered by the support of the Constitutional Democratic and Social group, which contributes another 25 deputies. This combined backing safely clears the absolute majority threshold of 198 seats required in the legislative body.
Party Finalizes Slate After Secret Ballot
Ahead of the parliamentary opening session presided over by King Mohammed VI, the PJD’s general secretariat evaluated three candidates for each available post before settling on its leadership lineup following a secret ballot. While El Azami was chosen to lead the party’s parliamentary group and contest the presidency of the lower house, A. Bouanou was selected as the party’s candidate for vice-president of the Chamber of Representatives.
