Italy’s energy policy in the Mediterranean represents a delicate balancing act between its two main gas suppliers, Algeria and Libya. On the one hand, Italy recognizes the importance of maintaining and expanding as much as possible its relationship with Algeria, a reliable and consolidated supplier of natural gas. On the other hand, it tries to harness the vast energy potential of Libya, a country with huge reserves that have remained largely untapped due to conflict and instability. These initiatives are part of the so-called Mattei Plan, aimed at diversifying the origins of suppliers and for Italy to assume a leading role as hub gas mediterranean
