Geopolitical dynamics in Central Asia. Cooperation and competition between China and Russia.- José Miguel Pardo Delgado
The strategic association in Central Asia between Russia and China is characterized in geopolitical terms by a dynamic where competition and cooperation interact, the latter prevailing in the present scenario. Russia retains regional geopolitical influence through its dominance as a commercial freight transit route and energy corridor in Eurasia and by maintaining its hegemony as a security provider. However, the Chinese strategy aimed at guaranteeing its energy security and expanding its economic presence is weakening Russia’s geopolitical leadership in Central Asia. Added to this is China’s assumption of a more active role in maintaining regional stability by promoting greater military and security cooperation outside of Russia.
