Hong Kong and the principle of “one country, two systems.”- Carmen Cano de Lasala

The principle of “One Country, Two Systems” was fundamental to Hong Kong’s peaceful return to China’s sovereignty as a Special Administrative Region in 1997.

The Basic Law, the so-called mini-constitution of Hong Kong, enshrines its high degree of autonomy and exclusive powers. With uncertainty looming, as the end of the fifty-year period granted by the Basic Law to preserve Hong Kong’s capitalist system and way of life approached, aspirations to achieve universal suffrage fueled the “umbrella movement” in 2014. Later, the rivalry between the United States and China would fuel distrust between the two systems, as developments in mainland China under Xi Jinping contributed to the progressive erosion of the “one country, two systems” principle.
