Russian nuclear roulette.- José Pardo de Santayana
During the Cold War, the atomic weapon played a central role in the security strategy of both blocs. The Ukrainian conflict, which confronts the two nuclear superpowers of the moment, has given it back all its validity.
With China, North Korea and Iran also threatening the non-proliferation system, there is a risk of a global nuclear race.
The war in Ukraine seems headed for a prolonged duel that will devastate that country and put Europe to the test. Some analysts argue that, because Russia will never use the atomic resource or because the corresponding risk must be assumed, Moscow must be imposed an unmitigated defeat.
Others consider that Russian nuclear blackmail is not bluffing and, in any case, the risk is unaffordable because they fear that the Kremlin will go to the last extreme rather than accept a humiliating defeat.
It is not easy to strike the right balance between firmness and prudence, considering that President Putin has proven to be a dangerous foe and seems determined not to accept complete failure.
