Saudi Arabia between the Rimland and the confluence of the great powers.- José Ignacio Castro Torres
Saudi Arabia is an important player in the new world order, as it is strategically located in the south of the coastal strip of the great Eurasian continent, which Spykman once defined as the Rimland. In addition, its oil riches give it the ability to influence globally. The recent visit to this state by Chinese leader Xi Jinping and his warm reception by King Salman contrast with the discreet visit last summer by US President Joe Biden, who met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS). Among both receptions, the Saudi decision stands out, in collusion with Russia, to reduce oil production to the chagrin of the Western allies, who are struggling with an energy crisis against the background of the conflict in Ukraine.
