The suspension of Russia’s participation in the New START treaty.- Luis V. Pérez Gil
In this essay we examine the genesis, entry into force and development of the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty known as New START, as well as its permanence as a fundamental instrument for the maintenance of the strategic stability regime between the two largest nuclear powers, the United States. United States and Russia, since the end of the Cold War. We also analyze the demands introduced by the Trump Administration during the negotiations for its renewal and the express extension launched by the new Biden Administration as soon as it came to power. Finally, we will study how the involvement of the West in the war in Ukraine has affected the strategic relations between Russia and the United States —endangering the existence of the aforementioned strategic security regime— and the impact that the disappearance of New START may have on the global security system in the short and medium term.
