Towards a new vision of European cooperation with Africa.- Ignacio Fuente Cobo
Africa is a continent as immense as it is contradictory. In the current international environment, it appears as a booming continent geopolitical space with some of the fastest growing countries in recent years, offering great opportunities for cooperation. Likewise, Africa faces a growing number of challenges that it shares with Europe, including climate change, demographic pressure, energy transition, digital transformation, the terrorist threat or the war in Ukraine.
While the ties that unite Africa and Europe are broad and deep as a result of history, geographical proximity and shared interests, the new emerging international order means that it is attracting the attention of other global actors that compete with Europe. The European Union must adapt to the new reality described with a renewed vision of its strategic partnership with Africa, which better integrates African and European concerns when jointly addressing the common challenges of the 21st century. The result should be a strengthened partnership that makes cooperation more agile, transparent and efficient to overcome the difficulties that have arisen in recent decades. If Europe wants to avoid being displaced by competing powers, it is time for it to elevate its relationship with Africa.
