United States-Vietnam strategic partnership: a new phase in the containment of China.- Miguel Ángel Melián Negrín
The United States and Vietnam have agreed to raise their relations to the highest diplomatic level by signing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement, which introduces the North American country into the small group made up of China, Russia and South Korea, and which it will soon join. India. Taking into account that Vietnam’s foreign relations do not contemplate a higher level of ties, this culminating step marks a historic turn in the relationship between both actors.
Added to this agreement is a geopolitical situation strongly marked by Chinese ambitions in Southeast Asia. Without a doubt, for both Vietnam and the United States, this situation involves high-level geopolitical interests, and both are determined to react. In the described framework, the idea of rescuing a concept that would mark the geopolitics of the 20th century resonates: the policy of containment, whose principles, if applied with a certain caution and balance, can make feasible a counterweight to the Asian giant that begins a new phase. Otherwise, the PRC’s actions could have unprecedented regional and global impact.
