The “two sessions” in March have been the last stage of a long ten-year journey of changes, aimed at making Xi Jinping’s third re-election possible and concentrating power in his hands. The transition cycle, necessary to reverse the collective leadership model established by Deng Xiaoping, has ended in an orderly fashion. However, everything that Xi Jinping has identified as institutional reform involves a questioning of the changes promoted by his predecessors to resolve the succession and reposition the relationship of the Party with the State.
Succession difficulties, which have been identified as typical of dictatorships, are not exclusive to autocratic models. The accentuated polarization in the United States —also in the rest of the West— weakens its position as a competitor, strengthening China’s as long as Xi decides to remain in power.
With an alliance between China and Russia, a war in Ukraine, a clear detachment from the global south towards the West and a serious crisis of the democratic model, Xi Jinping’s advantage as the most powerful man in the world is a perception that could break through, impacting against the balance of power established by the significant symbolic displacement.
