Colombo,

Sri Lanka is mired in a severe economic crisis. The Sri Lankan economy, which is heavily dependent on tourism, is 90 percent affected by the corona epidemic. The shortage of foreign exchange caused problems in the import of goods, including fuel.

People are stunned by the onslaught of the economic crisis. The prices of fuel, food and essential commodities have risen sharply. Power generation is paralyzed due to lack of funds even to buy coal. There is electricity for several hours daily.

Former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said, “If I had been president, this situation would not have happened.” He told a television station in Sri Lanka that the economic crisis could be resolved in a very short period of time if better negotiations with the International Monetary Fund were carried out.

He said he had not been invited to run for the PM’s job, adding that he had no need to do so.
