“If artificial intelligence (AI) gets the numbers right, the lottery is over.” It is the forceful response of the delegate of the National Lottery in La Rioja, Carlos Ruizto the controversy generated last week when the well-known ‘chatbot’ application ChatGPT indicated that the winning number in the Christmas draw would be 3,695.
In an interview granted to Europa PressRuiz has lowered expectations and has indicated that the same commotion has arisen over this matter as in other years “when a psychic says he is going to play one number or another.” He has also made it clear that the number indicated by the AI ”can play, but like any other because they are all in the bass drum.”
Collapsed administrations
On November 15, a total of eight lottery administrations received a barrage of calls, emails and web requests from an unusual number. Unbeknownst to them, they were the administrations that sold the chosen ticket by the ‘chatbot’ application.
ChatGPT’s prediction is based solely on previous draws, so there is consensus among experts that it is nothing more than a ‘hallucination’ of the AI. Likewise, some inaccuracy has been reported in its prediction, since until 2010 each pot included 85,000 numbers and from the following year, 99,999 entered the draw, so it may certainly be inaccurate.

In the interview, Ruiz pointed out that people’s preferred endings “they are still 13 and 15”. In fact, of these two completions “there is nothing left, almost since July when the sale began.” To this, he has added those that end in the current year, in this case the 23rd. Regarding the latter, he has indicated that there are people who ask for “the date on which Infanta Leonor swore the Constitution or when the last elections were held.”
There are data that indicate that La Rioja is the second community that, predictably, will spend the most in the Lottery, with 108.4 euros per inhabitant – only surpassed by Castilla y León, which will go to 113.53 euros – and above the national average, which is 71.67 euros. However, Ruiz has stated that “it is the last month that he decides if the increase is definitive or remains to be seen.”
No luck in 2022
In the case of La Rioja, the 2022 Christmas lottery draw was elusive for the region, as it did not win the ‘Gordo’ prize, but neither did it win the remaining twelve important prizes.
