The cabinet committee on law and order has decided to shut down the social media including Facebook, YouTube if the government’s complaint is not taken into consideration.

This decision was taken at the cabinet committee meeting on law and order at the secretariat on Sunday (March 31).

After the meeting, Committee President and Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque informed the journalists.

He said that they (Facebook, YouTube, Google) do not listen to our recommendations on various issues due to the fact that their (Facebook, YouTube, Google) head office is not located here to prevent rumors and control cybercrime. We will publicize what they are not listening to. If necessary, they will be closed for some time. I will properly notify the international organization first – they are continuing these crimes, rumors without taking proper notice of our complaints and there is no initiative from their side.

‘First they will be told repeatedly, if necessary we will also tell them in the form of advertisements in newspapers. So that the people of the world do not think that any fundamental right is being violated here,’ he added.

According to the provisions of the law on social media, any complaint should be investigated and action taken. Stating that they are not investigating our complaints and taking action, the minister said, their indifference should be informed to the people through public notices, if ever they stop, the responsibility should not fall on the government, but on them (social media). People should know what we complained about them. We do not get redressal by complaining.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Public Administration Minister Farhad Hossain and other members of the committee were present in the meeting.
