Rémi Lefebvre, professor of political science at the University of Lille, author of Should we have hope of poverty? (Textuel, 2022), analysis, in an interview with MondeThe political obstacles of the New Popular Front (NFP) which is first in the legislative elections on July 7, but which is trying to get to propose a name for Matignon.
At the end of the legislative elections, the NFP could not claim victory even if it was a mixed victory?
No, it is not possible. In theory, it is important to confirm this victory, because the people of the left are asking for it, even if they do not expect it. The left cannot lose sight and leave the “point” to Emmanuel Macron. To preempt victory is to admit that the left is progressive, that it can win in the long run, that it offers hope when despair befalls the government. Social and electoral poverty has suffered many defeats…
But what happens next, we see, is very complicated. From one point of view, we can say that Jean-Luc Mélenchon [le leader de La France insoumise, LFI] “corner” left, even if it is above all means of immediate pressure on the Socialist Party [PS]. From now on, this “winner” is take it or leave it. Jean-Luc Mélenchon is a master of watches. He dictates the tempo. He responded quickly, at 8:03 pm, in the evening of the second round of the legislative elections, but there was a kind of indifference because the problems were not anticipated.
In fact, is this the right way to get this victory?
It is not easy to claim the victory of unexpected results and for which we do not see the way, perhaps, to ensure an exit.
The legislative elections were marked by the salutary oppression of leftist civil society. However, the current negotiations mark a return to partial profits and material logic. At the risk of disappointing the “people” of the left, more united than the organizations, and those who do not understand these misunderstandings. The left took the same strategy as after the dissolution of the National Assembly on July 9: quickly announced the union to make it change and force itself to finish. But there, things become, and the left maybe made a mistake by the rush: but do you have a choice, because it is necessary to get the “victory” of your camp?
Why did the negotiations on the left to agree on the name of the Prime Minister failed?
Mainly because the balance of power on the left has changed. PS is less fragile. The socialist party in the National Assembly has made significant progress while the LFI has stalled. After all, because of the single position of the Prime Minister when there are 577 constituencies… It is the same problem, basically, as producing a single presidential candidate.
