The legal soap opera continues for international rugby player Mohamed Haouas, sentenced this Friday, June 30 to 18 months in prison, including 9 months in prison following acts of violence on January 1, 2014 in a bakery in Montpellier. A more severe decision than the requisitions of the prosecutor who had asked for 2 years in prison with probationary suspension for 3 years. At the end of the hearing, at which Mohamed Haouas was not present, his lawyer, master Marc Gallix, announced that he was going to appeal.

“We have no choice but to appeal because if the sentence becomes final, Mohamed Haouas will have to go back to prison, the sentences being adjustable up to a maximum of twelve months”, he explains. Mohamed Haouas having already been sentenced on May 30 to 12 months’ imprisonment in the domestic violence case, the international now has, with this morning’s decision, 21 months’ imprisonment.

“The purpose of the appeal is not to challenge today’s decision, continues the lawyer, but to allow time to adjust the twelve-month sentence in the domestic violence case”. Maître Marc Gallix relies on a “legal subtlety” making the adjustment of a sentence in the form of parental parole (which he requested in his request in the domestic violence case) an exception to this maximum duration of 12 months suitable for conversion. “If this parental parole is not accepted, then it will be the electronic bracelet and we will fall back into the 12 months that can be adjusted at the most. »

The decision on this will be taken after the summer. By appealing, master Marc Gallix also intends to play the clock: “this leaves us almost two years before the hearing – the delays on appeal are very long -, enough to adjust the sentence in the case of domestic violence”. In the meantime, on the sporting level, Mohamed Haouas left for Clermont-Ferrand to present himself to his new club this Saturday, July 1. “We hope for a transaction and an amicable settlement for the breach of his contract”, recalls Marc Gallix, suggesting compensation equivalent to 18 months’ salary.

In addition, the five accomplices of Mohamed Haouas in the case of the bakery were given suspended sentences.
