As much as it is sometimes difficult to remember them, the four-digit codes for bank cards or mobile phones are not great protection. It is quoted that up to 10,000 different combinations can be made, but we tend to be lazy and limit those possibilities to just a few. How else can you explain that 1234 is the PIN for 10% of the cards?

The figure, which can only be an estimate, was dared to be given by the recently deceased British data mining expert, author of the ‘Data Genetics’ blog, Nick Berry. He carried out the test from 3.4 million passwords exposed on the Internet and came to the conclusion that a list of only 20 combinations already included 26% of the analyzed keys.

Because? Well, because we believe that, for example, when choosing our year of birth we are putting a number that could be random if the person who steals our card does not have personal information. But we’re actually increasing your chances of being right by limiting our choice options to keys starting with 19 or 20. In 2012, when Berry did the analysis, 20% of the keys analyzed started with 19.

In the same way, we also have that false sense of security when we resort to easy combinations such as 1111 or 2580 (the numbers that occupy the vertical line in the middle of the mobile keyboard), the sequential ones (1234), those that contain repetitions, either doubling digits (1212) or modifying only one, type 1112.
