Cyberstalked twins have decided to deal with their attacker alone since the police, discouraged by the weakness of the law, have given up on intervening.
10 years ago, Madison Conradis received nude photos of herself when she was just 24, from an unknown Facebook account, reports the Washington Post.
Photos of the young woman, who had just started a new marketing job with a Florida company, were from behind the scenes of a shoot she had done in college as part of her former career as a model and actress . These photos obviously had to remain private.
Madison assumed they were obtained when the photographer’s website was hacked a year earlier.
The person who posted these photos wanted more and so created a fake Facebook account under the fake name “Joe Bummer” to privately message Madison asking for new explicit photos, threatening to post the photos already. in her possession if she refused.
After two years of hoping for a new Florida state anti-cyberstalking law to end her torture, Madison turned to the local police station and came clean. She was told that what she was going through was not criminal.
So Madison enlisted the help of her twin sister, Christine, who had just passed the bar exam. Although her sister specializes in environmental law, she quickly realized the shortcomings of the law regarding cyberbullying.
With the help of a lawyer, the twins eventually managed to have some of the footage taken down, but without the help of the police no one could be found criminally guilty.
Like real private detectives, the twins continued to investigate and complete the puzzle, gathering evidence.
However, it was not until July 2019 that the FBI took charge of the case of six women victims of cyberstalking thanks to the evidence collected by Christine.
The person responsible was eventually sentenced to 15 years in federal prison, and most of the photos were removed from the Internet.
