The acting head of the city of Kharkov, secretary of the Kharkov city council Igor Terekhov won the mayoral elections, having received over 146 thousand votes. This was announced at a briefing on Monday, November 1, by the head of the Kharkiv City Territorial Election Commission, Elena Matvienko.

Terekhov is not a representative of the Servant of the People presidential party. He participated in the elections as a nominee of the “Kernes Bloc”, formed by the followers of the previous mayor of Kharkiv, Gennady Kernes, who died in December 2020.

Exit polls predicted Terekhov’s victory

According to the territorial election committee, 146,249 people voted for Terekhov, which amounted to 50.66 percent of the 288,645 citizens who took part in the elections. In second place is his main competitor, the ex-head of the Kharkiv region, a former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada from the Opposition Bloc faction Mikhail Dobkin, who received the support of 82,008 voters and thus gained 28.21 percent of the vote.

Terekhov’s victory was predicted by the data of two exit polls, as well as the results of the parallel counting by representatives of the Opora civilian network. Dobkin considers the information provided by the exit polls to be ordered.

Extraordinary elections of the mayor, appointed in connection with the death of Gennady Kernes, were held in Kharkov on October 31. According to the regional committee, the turnout was 28.29 percent.
