Increase in covid-19 cases in Guatemala

In recent days, the Ministry of Public Health has reported an increase in Covid-19 cases in Guatemala City. This increase could be related to the recent heavy rains, which force people to remain in closed spaces with little ventilation, facilitating the transmission of the virus between people who are in the same place.

In addition, the lack of protective measures and the neglect in the application of health protocols also contribute to the spread of the disease. As of July 21, 2,263 cumulative cases were recorded, with one death. The municipalities with the highest incidence of positive cases are Guatemala, Mixco, Quetzaltenango, Villa Nueva, San Miguel Petapa and Zacapa.

Be alert to symptoms

To prevent a further increase in the number of cases, it is crucial that the population implements and maintains adequate protective measures. These are the symptoms that infected people may present:

  • Fever
  • Dry cough
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat
  • Loss of smell or taste

Preventive measures

Preventive measures are the best way to protect yourself and your family. These include wearing masks, frequent handwashing with soap and water, using disinfectant gel with at least 70% alcohol, maintaining physical distancing, and avoiding crowds and closed spaces.

Likewise, cover your nose and mouth properly using the inside of your arm when sneezing or coughing and wash your hands immediately, and keep environments ventilated in workplaces and educational centers.
