Chennai:

In developing countries like India, it takes a decade or more to win medals at the Olympics. Adopting technology-based player performance enhancement is critical to achieving this goal.

To achieve the ambitious goal of increasing the number of medals in the upcoming 2024 Olympics, the Indian government has shortlisted a few key sports and is focusing its efforts on them. Sports include archery, boxing, badminton, wrestling, hockey, weightlifting, cycle racing, athletics.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Madras) in Chennai, in collaboration with the Inspire Institute of Sports, are developing advanced boxing analytics software to boost India’s medal haul at the 2024 Olympics.

Smartboxer, a low-cost analytics platform, uses wearable sensors and video cameras to calculate four key aspects of boxing evaluation to help evaluate boxers’ performance. The Center of Excellence for Sports Science and Analytics has developed an analytics software called Smartboxer that has several versions. It will help improve the competitiveness of Indian sportspersons. IIT Madras is developing the SmartBoxer software with this objective in mind.

According to IIT Madras Professor Ranganathan Srinivasan, the technology currently being developed can act as a bridge between the coach and the elite athlete to identify, understand and creatively improve performance. He mentioned that SmartBoxer is one of the various initiatives undertaken by IIT Madras to achieve the Indian government’s ambitious goal of winning more medals in Olympic Games.
