Opened in 1931, the Empire State Building in New York is considered a milestone in architectural history. With a structural height of 381 meters, it pushed the then still new steel frame construction to its limits and remained the tallest building in the world for 40 years. Today, the 828 meter high Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which was inaugurated in 2010, bears this title. Both buildings have achieved cult status and are tourist magnets.
