The deal is a setback for FC Bayern. The Munich team had tried very hard to sign Doué. Former Bundesliga professional Xherdan Shaqiri is returning to his youth club FC Basel after twelve years. The former Swiss international comes from Chicago Fire and has signed a three-year contract with the 20-time champions. The club announced this on Friday. Shaqiri had previously terminated his contract with MLS club Chicago.
“It fills me with pride and I am very happy that I can return to my hometown of FCB today. I have had a deep connection with the club and the region since I was a child. As a fan and of course as a player,” said Shaqiri, who ended his career in the national team after 125 games following the European Championship in Germany. He wants to “attack again with FCB.”
The 32-year-old has played for numerous FC Basel youth teams and moved from the Rhine to the Isar to FC Bayern in 2012. Shaqiri won a total of nine titles in 81 competitive matches for the German record champions, including the treble in 2013. Before moving to the USA, he played for other clubs, including Inter Milan and Liverpool FC.
