Authorities began investigating the warehouse in March after a local code enforcement officer identified a garden hose attached to a back wall of the building. As the search continued, medical devices such as COVID-19 and pregnancy tests, seemingly manufactured on-site, were discovered. Fresno County Public Health staff documented the presence of blood, tissue, bodily fluid samples, and thousands of vials of unlabeled fluids and suspected biological material.
Of the mice found inside the warehouse, authorities were forced to euthanize approximately 800 animals due to the risks they posed. An additional 175 mice were already dead upon their discovery.
Joe Prado, the assistant director of the Fresno County Department of Public Health, revealed the further dangers contained within the lab, stating, “There was over 800 different chemicals on site in different bottles of different acids. Unfortunately, a lot of these are being categorized under unknown chemicals.”
All the biohazard material within the lab has been safely destroyed as of July 7. However, investigations into the lab’s origins and activities are still ongoing, leaving authorities and health officials searching for answers.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Fresno County Department of Public Health were unresponsive to requests for comment, leaving the public eager for additional information regarding this unsettling incident.
