In its commitment to protect the lives of all citizens, the Mayor’s Office of Medellín is carrying out work to remove illegal constructions from a technical, operational and social perspective. The work is concentrated in 15 communes, where 65 critical sectors have been identified.

During the operations, it was noted that some people were building in high-risk areas, near high-tension cables, hillsides and rivers, or in environmental conservation areas.

“The surveillance and prevention work has allowed us to understand the dynamics of the city and to understand that in all the communes there are irregular constructions that put lives at risk. One of the specific cases is the La Asomadera sector, where we have had to go with all the institutionality due to the
disruption of public order that occurs every time our personnel arrive,” said the Secretary of Territorial Management and Control, Juan Manuel Velásquez.

To date, there are 1,200 technical reports with reports of illegal buildings. Based on this, the psychosocial team goes into the area to raise awareness, disseminate the institutional offer with housing options and prevent people from acquiring lots from criminal groups.

The District Administration reports the recovery of 17,915 meters of public space with these interventions.

“We have to act in conjunction with the National Police and the Secretariat of Security and Coexistence, which are in charge of identifying the people behind the illegality. The alert is being issued and we want citizens to help us understand that we have to build Medellín well together,” added the secretary.

Public Companies of Medellin reminds that buildings must have at least 10 meters free on each side in front of the power transmission networks and towers. Likewise, planting trees or carrying out any activity under these types of infrastructures must be avoided.
