Twenty-five irregular immigrants have been rescued this Friday in the fire that for two weeks has ravaged the Greek region of Evros, and where on the 22nd 18 charred corpses of refugees who had entered the country from nearby Turkey were found.

The immigrants were rescued by firefighters in the Dadia forest and are being transferred to an urban area, according to the Greek public broadcaster ERT, without providing further details.

A corridor between the flames

The fire brigade, which confirmed that they are irregular immigrants, reported that a corridor was opened in the flames to get them out of the fire. Then, in cooperation with the police, the migrants were taken to a safe place in the town of Dadia.

On the 22nd, the charred bodies of 18 irregular immigrants, including two children, were located in the area, and another body later appeared near that group, which is believed to have also belonged to someone who had crossed from Turkey.

Almost 600 firefighters with a hundred vehicles, six tanker planes and two helicopters are trying to contain the mega-fire that started on the 19th and has already burned more than 81,000 hectares.

This fire is already considered the largest ever recorded in the European Union. And it is the most serious of the wave of fires that has affected Greece for two weeks and that have devastated 160,000 hectares, 1.2 percent of the country’s surface, according to data from the European Information System on Forest Fires.
