The princess of Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced her divorce.
According to the BBC on the 17th (local time), Dubai’s Princess Sheikha Mahra bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced on her Instagram that day, “To my husband. As you are busy with other colleagues, I hereby announce our divorce.”
He then wrote, “I divorce you, I divorce you, and I divorce you.” The phrase “I divorce you” repeated three times seems to be borrowed from Islamic practice. In the Islamic world, there is a practice in which a divorce is established when a husband tells his wife that he wants a divorce three times. This practice is currently not legally recognized in many countries because it is advantageous to the husband.
The princess concluded her message with, “Goodbye, your ex-wife.”
The couple had a lavish wedding in April last year and welcomed their first child two months ago.
Currently, the princess’s Instagram account has deleted her husband’s photos. It has also been confirmed that the princess’s photos have been deleted from her husband’s account.
The unusual divorce announcement has led some to speculate that the princess’s account may have been hacked.
Neither the princess’s husband nor the king have commented officially on the princess’s divorce announcement. The Dubai government and the UAE embassy in London also did not respond to questions about the matter, the BBC reported.
