As head of the agency for breakthrough innovations, Rafael Laguna de la Vera is supposed to make the German economy fit for the future. In the interview he talks about new freedoms, the consequences of the budget gap – and why a share-linked pension is needed for German innovations.

Mr. Laguna, in view of the budget crisis, the federal government has announced that it wants to save billions. What consequences does this have for the Sprind innovation agency – and for Germany as a location for innovation?

This doesn’t have much of an impact on us at the moment, except that it causes delays. The Sprind is financed through the normal budget and not through any special funds. And we are still relatively small. Energy, chips or climate are completely different calibers. I am very worried about Germany as a location for innovation – and we will see that very soon.
