The mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, announced this Friday an important measure that will be implemented in the capital city, with the aim of protect the health of pregnant women. After receiving a detailed report prepared by the UDELAR Faculty of Medicineit has been decided to extend the delivery of bottled water to all pregnant women in Montevideo, in order to avoid consumption of trihalomethanes and prevent possible adverse effects on human health.

The main concern lies in the effects that trihalomethanes can have on the developing fetuses during the early stages of pregnancy. As reported, the intake of these compounds is directly related to the appearance of two types of malformations in fetuses: those that affect the face and those that are linked to the cardiovascular system.

The decision to implement this measure is based on the importance of safeguarding the health of future mothers and their unborn babies. Scientific studies support the existence of a connection between exposure to trihalomethanes and the aforementioned malformations, which has led the municipal authorities to take concrete actions to avoid any potential risk.

“Regarding consumption in early stages of pregnancy, the evidence suggests a relationship with two sectors of malformations: face and cardiovascular system. In the face, high doses of trihalomethanes are associated with defects”, said Cosse in an exhibition when announcing the measure, with a voice that gradually broke, visibly moved.

“With the levels so high that it is being reported that they are going to be allowed, even healthy people should take care of themselves, look for other sources of water to ingest, because it really is a great load on the body and (it would be) making something work that is not the most healthy or prudent”, explained the dean of the Faculty of Chemistry at UDELAR, Álvaro Mombrú.

Delgado criticized Cosse for the conference: “It was unfortunate”

The secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, was once harsh with Cosse, criticizing her for the conference in which she made the announcement. “The press conference of the mayor of Montevideo today seemed unfortunate to us. We found it very irresponsible to manipulate medical information. On this sensitive issue, we must help and not alarm,” said the right-wing leader.

“On the merits of the matter, I believe that the important thing is to read, totally, completely, the report from the Faculty of Medicine, the report from Ursea (Regulatory Unit of Energy and Water Services) and the statement made by the dean of the medical school. I think they are very clear, that on the merits of the matter, I am not going to issue myself, they are quite technical issues and it is quite explained there, “added Delgado.
