A study found that drinking coffee every day could help prevent muscle mass loss.

According to the American health media VeryWellHealth on the 6th (local time), research results published in ‘Frontiers in Nutrition’ last month showed that drinking coffee helps prevent sarcopenia, a musculoskeletal disease.

A research team from Guangxi Medical University in China conducted a study based on health data from 3,833 American adults collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2018. The average age of the participants was 39.57, and 50.79% of the participants were women.

The research team assessed the participants’ muscle mass using bone density scans and determined their coffee consumption based on a self-administered questionnaire, which was administered twice during the study period.

As a result, it was found that people who drank coffee every day had 11-13% more muscle mass. In particular, the more caffeine they consumed, the greater the increase in muscle mass.

However, this association did not apply to everyone who participated in the study.

No significant association was found in those who drank decaffeinated coffee, and in particular, no association was found between coffee consumption and muscle mass gains in those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater.

“Coffee has various anti-inflammatory properties, and inflammation is known to be related to muscle loss,” said Dr. Dana Hunnes, a clinical inpatient dietitian at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). “If coffee can reduce inflammation in the body, it may also reduce the catabolic effects that occur when the body eats its own muscle.”

However, it is unclear how much coffee one needs to drink to see effects.

“It is possible that participants did not accurately report their coffee intake in the survey,” Dr. Hunnes said. “Drinking coffee alone does not prevent sarcopenia.”
