The International Monetary Fund (IMF) looks forward to playing an important role at the upcoming COP29 conference in Azerbaijan.
As Day.Az reports, this was stated by the director of the IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia department Jihad Azur during a press conference, answering a question from Trend.
“The Fund is an important partner for Azerbaijan in preparing for COP29. Last year and previously, we have been actively involved and expanded our climate support to member countries, providing programs designed to help countries accelerate their transitions and finance long-term climate priorities. This week we We will hold several meetings in this regard, and the IMF looks forward to continuing its active partnership with the Azerbaijani government and the opportunity to play an important role at COP29,” he said.
The IMF also integrates climate issues into its surveillance activities and provides extensive knowledge of priorities, including for the Caucasus and Central Asia region, he said.
“The Fund recently produced a series of analyzes on the importance of adaptation for the region, and how to address climate change mitigation and financing. These are important contributions that will be presented at COP29,” the IMF spokesperson added.
Let us recall that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in November this year in Azerbaijan. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) translated from English means “Conference of Parties”, this is the highest legislative body that controls the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
