Reports indicate that by 2022, 80% of individuals detained in immigration detention centers in Britain will be released from prison rather than being deported. This revelation comes from the Independent Monitoring Board’s (IMB) annual report, which found that the vast majority of detainees were being released without repatriation.

The Home Office, responsible for immigration enforcement in the UK, is supposed to detain individuals who have been caught illegally immigrating and facilitate their deportation. However, it seems that many detainees are being released after legal proceedings or after being assessed for health problems.

Government immigration data from 2015 to 2019 shows that a much higher percentage of those in detention were deported in comparison to the projected statistics for 2022. According to this data, an average of 44% of those incarcerated were deported during this time period.

One factor that may contribute to this high rate of detainees remaining in the country is the cost of immigration detention. The Home Office data shows that it costs £112.85 per person per night to detain someone for immigration purposes.

The revelation that the majority of individuals detained in immigration centers are not being deported as intended raises questions about the effectiveness of the UK’s immigration detention system and the government’s ability to carry out deportation orders.
