Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, Annecy… More than 400 collectives, associations, unions and political parties, including several undocumented migrant organizations, La France insoumise (LFI) and the Solidaires union, are calling for demonstrations this Sunday in the major cities of France against the Immigration law.

This text “takes up many ideas of the extreme right, such as national preference”, can we read in a joint press release. It “will have terrible consequences on the lives of hundreds of thousands of foreign inhabitants on French soil”, it is also written, the law being described as “racist and xenophobic”.

Gatherings are planned in nearly 40 cities, listed by Union syndicale solidaire. There we find, among others, Clermont-Ferrand, but also Nantes, Marseille, Strasbourg, Rennes, Lyon, Grenoble, Annecy or even Bordeaux, Chambéry and Hendaye. In Paris, the meeting was given at 3 p.m. at Place de la République.

“Withdrawal of the law is possible but the pressure must come from mobilization,” defended Denis Godard, a leader of the Solidarity March, at a press conference.

A new demonstration on January 21

Several hundred organizations have already written to the new Prime Minister upon his appointment on Tuesday, demanding a “clarification” of his migration policy. In the meantime, summarizes Pascal Brice, president of the Federation of Solidarity Actors (FAS), its member associations have “frozen political contacts” and no longer participate in any working meetings with the authorities.

On the other hand, more than 200 personalities – actors, writers, journalists and even the general secretaries of the CFDT Marylise Léon and the CGT Sophie Binet – are calling to hit the streets during a new meeting on Sunday January 21 against a law “drafted at the dictation of hate mongers”. The mobilization against this text “goes beyond the usual framework of associations which feel concerned” by this subject, observes Delphine Rouilleault, general director of France Terre d’Asile.

Adopted forceps by Parliament, the immigration bill notably restricts the payment of social benefits for foreigners, establishes migration quotas, calls into question the automaticity of land law and reestablishes an “illegal residence offense”. This text, which caused an open crisis within the presidential majority, was voted for by the National Rally which saw it as a consecration of the “national priority” that it defends.

Several points of the law could be deemed unconstitutional; the text is currently being examined by the Constitutional Council, which is due to render its decision on January 25. LFI deputy Andy Kerbrat had requested “complete censorship of the text”. “We call for the withdrawal of the law, we call on the government to take its responsibilities,” repeated the general secretary of the CGT Sophie Binet this Sunday on RTL“there are a number of provisions that we believe are unconstitutional, so I hope the law will be largely censored.”
