Immoral socialism – El Comercio

I am not referring to Socialism of the 21st Century, which in several countries has achieved sufficient merit to carry the title of this commentary. Today, with great regret, I refer to the Spanish Socialist Workers Party, PSOE, which governs Spain.

In desperation to remain in power, despite having obtained a lower number of votes than his opponent, the Popular Party, PP, he has not hesitated to ally himself with any group of deputies until he obtains the number of votes necessary for his investiture. The pact with Juns per Catalunya, JpC – the Catalan independentists – celebrated last weekend, would not have been possible unless President Sánchez’s interest in continuing in government came before basic ethical standards.

As the Spanish publication Economist & Juris points out, the PSOE pact with JpC aims to “achieve votes that are essential for the investiture of the PSOE candidate as President of the Government of Spain.” The pact includes an amnesty law to free from all responsibility those who carried out an illegal independence referendum in Catalonia in 2017 and who were sentenced to prison terms and fines by the Supreme Court in a ruling of October 14, 2019. In the pact introduces the concept of lawfare – “legal system that is used abusively for political purposes” – which would have been applied to affect Catalan independence supporters.

The amnesty and the introduction of lawfare have generated massive citizen demonstrations against it, and the pronouncement of the General Council of the Judiciary, the Madrid Bar Association, and eleven of the most important legal firms in Spain questioning such agreement, for attacking the independence of the powers and that criminal responsibilities are generated for the judges who sentenced the independentistas. The Supreme Court has expressed its strong rejection of any way in which political power intervenes in the decisions of judges and magistrates.

Sánchez has already agreed with Iglesias, from Podemos, to form the current government. About this character he said that he would never make an agreement “because he couldn’t sleep.” But the drug of power is of such potency that it surpasses any human appetite.
