jpnn.comJAKARTA – Imparsial urges the Indonesian House of Representatives and the government to stop discussing the revision of the TNI Law which is considered problematic.

This was conveyed by Imparsial Director Gufron Mabruri in response to the emergence of the government’s version of the TNI Bill problem inventory list (DIM).

According to Gufron, on July 8, 2024, the DPR had received a Presidential Letter (Surpres) regarding the TNI Bill without being accompanied by a DIM. Recently, the DIM made by the government regarding the TNI Law Amendment Bill that will be discussed in the DPR has been circulating in the public.

“Based on the government’s version of the DIM document in circulation, there are a number of problems that are far more serious than the draft of the TNI Bill version of the Baleg which endangers human rights and damages the governance of a democratic state,” said Gufron as quoted from a press release, Thursday (18/7).

Imparsial believes that the Indonesian House of Representatives should stop all forms of discussion on the agenda of revising the TNI Law, considering that the changes are not only not urgent, but the council also does not have enough time to discuss them.

It should be noted that the DPR is currently entering a recess period and will only return to the session period in mid-August. This means, said Gufron, the DPR only has a very short time, approximately 1 month, to complete the discussion of the revision of the TNI Law.

“With such a short time, we doubt that the DPR is able to complete the revision of this important law optimally and involve broad, meaningful public participation,” he said.

In addition, Imparsial assessed that the substance of the changes proposed by the government did not strengthen the TNI reform agenda that had been implemented since 1998, but rather the opposite.

Imparsial presented arguments for the DPR and the government to stop discussing the revision of the TNI Law (RUU TNI) which is considered problematic.
