Doctors must be encouraged to pay more attention to the mental health of their patients in order to identify those at higher risk.

While it is easy to imagine that cancer can impact the mental health of patients, it is nonetheless not easy to study this phenomenon precisely, especially not at a distance from diagnosis and treatment. Nevertheless, this has been made possible thanks to the French Canto cohort, which has been monitoring no fewer than 14,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer since 2012. The results, presented in June in Chicago at the World Oncology Congress, advocate for an early assessment of patients’ psychological vulnerability, in order to offer them a tailored care pathway and thus reduce the risks of deterioration in their mental health.

Presented by Dr. Antonio Di Meglio, an oncologist and researcher within the After-Cancer team at Gustave-Roussy (Villejuif), the study is based on the analysis of data from 9,087 patients aged 20 to 85 years old.
