In January 2024 Contributory pensions, among which the retirement pension is the best known and most popular, will rise again according to the CPI YoY average for November. In this way it is ensured that pensioners do not lose purchasing power, but there is still more: according to the provisions of the Royal Decree-Law 2/2023, of March 16, on urgent measures to extend the rights of pensioners, reduce the gender gap and establish a new sustainability framework for the public pension system, between 2024 and 2027 there will be a progressive increase in these pensions with the objective that the minimum contributory amounts reach 60% of the median income in Spain in 2027, the date from which they cannot fall below the poverty line.
In this way, on January 1, 2024, the reference amount of pensions will also increase by the percentage necessary to reduce by and 20% the existing gap between the reference amount of the contributory retirement pension for people over 65 with a dependent spouse and the poverty threshold calculated for a household of two adults, as indicated by the BBVA Pension Institute.

According to Social Security calculations, by 2027 the minimum retirement pensions with a dependent spouse will reach 16,500 euros per year, 22% more than at present.
