We express our infinite gratitude to the Bulgarian government and the city of Sofia for hosting this important meeting and providing excellent conditions for the successful holding of our plenary session, said IPCC Chair Jim Skia during the opening of the 61st session of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Amendments to climate, which will take place in Sofia from July 27 to August 2.
More than 500 delegates from 150 countries will work on climate change issues in our capital.
“I must mention that I also had the great privilege of visiting the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences the other day, where I spoke on the topic: “International Scientific Conference on Climate Risks in the Black Sea Region” and saw for myself the strength of the scientific capacity in this region. That’s why I’m particularly pleased that the Bulgarian Minister of Environment and Water, Petar Dimitrov, is here with us,” Skia added.
In his words, the importance of the delegates’ work in the coming days deserves full attention and commitment.
“I am convinced that the far-reaching decisions will enable the IPCC to do its best and most relevant work yet,” he added.
“As the person responsible for presiding over our proceedings and our complex search for consensus, I must impress upon all of us the need to maintain the highest standards of debate and to ensure a constructive, solution-oriented and respectful spirit throughout this plenary. When we work together, we deliver,” the IPCC chair concluded.
The IPCC is the scientific panel responsible for systematizing, analyzing and disseminating scientific information related to the state of the planet’s climate and the necessary measures to adapt to the coming climate changes. The panel’s regular reports serve as a scientific basis for countries to make decisions about planning and implementing climate policies.
