Ajit Nivard Cabral, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, has stressed that migrant workers should use only official means to send money to Sri Lanka.

Remittances from foreign workers, the main source of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka, declined further in November 2021. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has stated that the remittances of foreign workers in November 2021 was US $ 271.4 million.

This is a decrease of 55.6% compared to US $ 611.7 million in remittances received in November 2020. The total value of remittances received in the first 11 months of 2021 was US $ 5,166.3 million.

This is down 17.9 percent from $ 6,291.2 million in the first 11 months of 2020. That figure was $ 317.4 million in October 2021, down 49.6 percent from $ 630.7 million in October 2020.
