Imports of energy products into the EU decreased in the second quarter

In the second quarter of 2024, the EU imported energy products worth €94.9 billion or a total of 177.9 million tonnes. Compared to the same quarter of 2023, imports decreased both in terms of value (-10.7 percent) and in net weight (-9.7 percent), the European statistical service Eurostat announced on its website, BTA reports.

A slight increase was recorded in the value of imported petroleum oils (+5.6 percent compared to the second quarter of 2023), while the volume of their imports reported a slight decrease (-2.2 percent).

The value of imported natural gas in gaseous state decreased by 31.4 percent in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same quarter of 2023, while the volume decreased by 9.5 percent. A similar trend is observed in liquefied gas, with imports showing a sharp drop in value (-41.2 percent) and volume (-20.2 percent).

Similar trends are observed in the average monthly values ​​for the second quarter of 2024 compared to the average monthly values ​​of the previous years. Imports of petroleum products have seen slight fluctuations. The monthly average value of imported petroleum oils was 1.6 percent lower than the monthly average value for the same period in 2023, and the volume decreased by 3.6 percent. At the same time, large reductions are reported for liquefied natural gas – with a 42.8 percent decrease in value and 15.3 percent decrease in volume, and for natural gas in gaseous state – with a 37.0 percent decrease in value and 4.8 percent reduction in volume.

Norway and the United States are major energy suppliers

In the second quarter of 2024, the majority of EU petroleum oil imports came from the United States (15.1 percent), Norway (14.1 percent) and Kazakhstan (11.7 percent)

Most of the natural gas in gaseous state came from Norway (43.5 percent), followed by Algeria with 21.6 percent and Russia with 15.5 percent.

Almost half of the imported liquefied natural gas (46.0 percent) came from the USA, and Russia (16.8 percent) and Qatar (11.9 percent) were significantly behind.
