Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Germany, with approximately 71,000 diagnoses annually. The study, led by Carolyn Taylor from the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the British University of Oxford, analyzed the data of around 512,000 women with early-stage breast cancer in England. These women were registered between January 1993 and December 2015 as part of the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service, with a follow-up conducted in December 2020.
The researchers found that the long-term survival rates for breast cancer patients are high, although they vary depending on the stage of the disease. Early-stage breast cancer is significantly more treatable than advanced-stage tumors that have spread throughout the body.
“The prognosis for women with early invasive breast cancer has improved significantly since the 1990s. Most can assume that they will survive the cancer in the long term, even if the risk remains considerable for a few,” concluded Carolyn Taylor and her team.
The study results revealed a remarkable decline in the average risk of dying from breast cancer within five years of diagnosis, dropping from 14 percent in the 1990s to just five percent. This positive trend can be attributed to the advancements in therapy methods and early detection options.
