Isolating Yourself While Sleeping Improves Sleep for Pregnant Women, Study Finds

A recent study has found that pregnant women who isolate themselves from external stimuli while sleeping experience better and longer sleep. Using ear plugs and a sleep mask during sleep has proven to have a positive effect on pregnant women’s sleep quality. Additionally, information about sleep hygiene was also beneficial, although to a lesser degree.

The study involved 210 women between 34 and 36 weeks into their pregnancy who were tracked for their sleep patterns. The results revealed that these women were only getting a maximum of six hours of sleep per night. However, those who used a sleep mask and hearing protection experienced an increase in sleep duration by an average of 23 minutes. On the other hand, those who received sleep hygiene information saw an average increase of 10 minutes in their sleep duration. The researchers also used questionnaires to assess sleep quality, which showed improvement for those using ear plugs and a sleep mask, but not for those who received sleep hygiene information.

According to the researchers, approximately half of pregnant women experience sleep problems, particularly as they approach the end of their pregnancy. It is important to address these sleep issues as poor and insufficient sleep has been linked to various complications, such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and premature births. By taking measures to ensure good sleep, the health of both the mother and child can be promoted.

However, it is important to note that this study only lasted for one week, so its findings did not cover any potential influences on health, metabolism, or the duration of pregnancy. Further research is needed to explore these aspects.

The study, published in the specialist magazine “Sleep,” emphasizes the significance of improving sleep quality for pregnant women. By using ear plugs and a sleep mask, expecting mothers can potentially enhance their overall well-being and reduce the risk of experiencing complications during pregnancy.
