Metro Bilbao and Once have presented two new measures to improve accessibility with hearing or visual disabilities. Both initiatives facilitate access to information on the operation of the metro service. It consists of a video-interpretation platform, SvIsual, and a Braille signage, placed in the lower area of the railings.

The first of the measures presented aims to improve care for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. It involves the implementation of a video-interpretation platform that allows remote communication. This service, which will be provided at the same time as Metro Bilbao, makes it possible for these users to have access to information on equal terms.

After downloading this application, anyone who needs it has the option of contacting the video interpreting service, which has sign language interpreters, and interpreting their questions or concerns to the Metro Bilbao staff. To do this, you must enter the numerical code that is present in all the intercoms of the network facilities. Through this identification number, whoever answers the call will know the exact location of the deaf person.

Braille on the railings

To help visually impaired travelers, Braille signage has been installed at all stations, placed in the lower area of the railings of the mezzanine to provide guidance on the direction to take to access the destination platform of your journey. For the development of this project, a group of Once volunteers has been involved, who tested the pilot project at the Indautxu station. As a result of this collaboration, various improvements were incorporated up to the signage that has already been implemented.

Both measures, already implemented in Metro Bilbao, are added to those previously implemented with the same purpose of facilitating equal travel for all passengers. In June 2021, new actions aimed at people with functional diversity were launched to make it easier to recharge and purchase the Barik card and notify them when the balance does not exceed two euros. To this end, new software and hardware were enabled and installed in 73 vending machines and 430 ticketing machines at stations on metro lines 1 and 2.
