New Report Calls for More Research on Nutrition and Health in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, the aging population is not only getting older but also heavier and more frequently plagued by chronic illnesses. While nutrition is known to play a crucial role in health, there is often inadequate knowledge about the correlation between nutrition and well-being. To address this issue, ZonMw, in partnership with the RIVM, the Health Council, and the Nutrition Center, has compiled a comprehensive report titled “Nutrition and Health” that presents the knowledge gaps to the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport.

The current nutritional policies and information are primarily based on guidelines from the Health Council, which, in turn, are derived from the best available scientific evidence. The Good Nutrition Guidelines, established by the Health Council, provide recommendations on the optimal daily intake of various nutrients to maintain proper bodily function and prevent diseases. These guidelines are heavily influenced by the scientific literature and international advice, particularly that of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

However, the majority of research on nutrition and health has primarily focused on healthy, relatively young individuals with normal body weight. Consequently, some of the nutritional standards may not be easily applicable to the older and overweight population of today. There is a pressing need for additional research to further develop and refine the existing guidelines, align nutritional standards with the changing population dynamics, and cater to vulnerable groups such as the elderly and pregnant women.

Through in-depth knowledge about nutrition and health among different target groups in society, the Health Council and the Nutrition Center can enhance their advice and recommendations. By implementing these guidelines and standards in research, a better understanding of the nutritional status of the Netherlands can be achieved. Furthermore, tailored nutritional and lifestyle interventions and policies can be developed to cater to specific population segments.

ZonMw is advocating for a research program that will focus on the advancement and improvement of the Good Nutrition Guidelines, as well as the broader substantiation of the nutritional standards that are more aligned with the current Dutch population. Such a program would generate short-term knowledge that can be utilized in nutrition policies, ultimately contributing to the overall health and well-being of the Dutch population.

The “Nutrition and Health: Investing in the Basis for Nutritional Policy” report was the result of collaboration between ZonMw, RIVM, and nutrition researchers. The Health Council and the Nutrition Center also played an instrumental role by offering their ideas and expertise.

This report marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by the changing demographic and health landscape in the Netherlands. By prioritizing research and refining nutritional guidelines, the country can improve the health outcomes of its citizens and establish itself as a leader in nutrition policy.
