Gouda Woman Advocates for Change in Breast Cancer Screening Procedures
Gouda, Netherlands – In a bid to revolutionize breast cancer screening procedures, Muriel van der Draaij from Gouda is set to address the House of Representatives on Thursday. Her mission is to highlight the need for change in the current population screening for breast cancer, specifically focusing on the pain many women experience during mammography.
Every year, more than a million women in the Netherlands undergo breast cancer screening, which aims to detect the disease at its early stages. However, for a significant number of women, the associated mammography is extremely painful and discomforting.
In an interview, Muriel shared her motivation behind addressing the House of Representatives, saying, “It’s disheartening to witness countless women going through unnecessary pain during an already anxiety-inducing examination. As someone who has personally experienced the discomfort, I strongly believe it’s time to reevaluate the screening process and explore better alternatives.”
Mammography, the current standard screening method, involves compressing the breasts between two plates to obtain high-quality X-ray images. While it is an effective diagnostic tool, its invasive nature often leads to considerable pain and discomfort for many women. As a result, some women may avoid or delay screenings, putting their health at risk.
Muriel plans to propose alternative screening options to the House of Representatives, hoping to mitigate the pain associated with mammography while maintaining the accuracy of the screening process.
“I have spent extensive time researching potential alternatives, such as 3D mammography, thermography, and ultrasound,” Muriel explained. “These alternatives have shown promising results in other countries, significantly reducing the pain experienced during breast cancer screenings.”
She further emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “We owe it to the women in our country to provide them with a screening process that is not only effective but also comfortable. By making these necessary changes, we can ensure that more women will actively participate in cancer screenings, leading to early detection and increased survival rates.”
Muriel’s campaign has already gained support from numerous women’s health organizations and breast cancer survivors across the country. They are optimistic that her efforts to raise awareness about the issue will pave the way for positive changes in breast cancer screening procedures.
