IMSS Ensenada Hospital: Director Supervises New 216-Bed Facility

A new regional hospital in Ensenada, Baja California, promises to expand medical care access wiht 330 beds and 40 medical specialties, including advanced services like hemodynamics and tocosurgery.

The general director of the Mexican Social Security institute (IMSS), Zoé robledo, recently toured the ongoing construction of the Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 23 in Ensenada. The project aims to elevate the quality of healthcare available to residents of Ensenada and the broader southern Baja California region through modernized infrastructure and cutting-edge technology.

Construction, spearheaded by the secretariat of National Defence (Defense), is currently 27 percent complete as of May 20, 2025. The second stage of construction focuses on a 216-bed hospital, alongside 114 non-registrant beds, with an anticipated completion date by the end of the current year.

During the site visit, IMSS leadership received updates on the progress of bodies 5 and 6 of the building. Body 5 will house hospitalization units for general surgery, internal medicine, emergency services, tocosurgery, hemodynamics, and hospital admissions. The layout is designed for efficient patient flow and specialized treatment.

Body 6 will be home to advanced imaging capabilities, including a Tomography Room and a Magnetic Resonance Unit. It will also feature hospitalization areas for pediatrics and gynecology-obstetrics, a dairy formula laboratory, storage facilities, administrative offices, and essential safety and hygiene areas.

HGR No. 23 will offer a extensive range of 40 medical specialties, encompassing Allergy and Immunology, Anesthesiology, Angiology and Vascular Surgery, Audiology, Otoneurology and Phoniatrics, Cardiology, and various surgical disciplines like General, Maxillofacial, Oncological, and Pediatric Surgeries, and also Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.

The 7.67-hectare hospital grounds will also include a dedicated building for physical medicine and rehabilitation, complete with a Cardiac Rehabilitation Module. The facility will further boast 40 offices,12 operating rooms,a clinical laboratory,a Pain Clinic,and a Breast Clinic.
