IMSS promotes breastfeeding rooms

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) promotes the benefits of breastfeeding, which has increased the number of women who choose this form of feeding for their newborn, said the head of the Family Planning and Breastfeeding Area of the institution, Elina Alvarado de Luzuriaga.

Within the framework of the World Breastfeeding Weekwhich is commemorated from August 1st to 7th, Alvarado said that less than two years have passed since the launch of the Comprehensive Maternal Care Model (AMIIMSS) breastfeeding coverage went from one in 10 children under six months to four in 10.

He highlighted that at the end of 2023, the coverage of girls and boys who were exclusively breastfed registered 43 percent, benefiting 125,247 children under six months of age; this percentage is above the average referred to by the World Health Organization (WHO) worldwide, which is 38 percent.

Furthermore, from January to May of this year, more than 52 thousand breastfeeding women have decided to grant this benefit exclusively to their daughter or son.

She reported that currently the Social Security has 63 breastfeeding rooms in UMF, three in hospitals and seven in Administrative Units of Regulatory Organ for use during the working day, which gives a total of 73 breastfeeding rooms, to which are added 126 lactation rooms.
